From Somewhere, Volume Two

Welcome to the News Wheel….

As we all do, I usually juggle a lot of information on a daily basis.  Most of which gets used and digested in one format or another. This will be a somewhat scattered digest of that information- which may not or may not be expanded upon here or elsewhere at a later point when I’ve had a chance to properly have a chance to process it.  I’ll add to on as I come across things in the day. Ta-da! Content you have to check back for! Fun, yes?

It might be an idea clearing house, it might even be entertaining. All I can tell you now is that its a thing called the News Wheel. And it begins after the jump.  Enjoy!

- V took a hit in the ratings- down about 30% from last week’s opener. Which is to be completely expected, since folks were curious about the re-boot. So, it would appear some of those folks found NCIS to be a bit more their speed. And you can figure you what that means for yourself.

But, having viewed both the opener and this week’s episode- it would seem as though the setup is being a bit rushed. The original NBC Mini Series had the same number of installments you’re going get here at first, but had an extra hour per installment in which to do it.

I am interested in the alien sleeper cell subplot that the reboot’s added in- which is a nice touch. Of course, I also said this when Torchwood tried this plot in a second series episode entitled “Sleeper”, written by James Moran. And, as I also said at the time, the setup was perfect for an arc subplot that could have forwarded throughout the second series- and possibly beyond as a real defining potential re-occurring threat on the show- much in the way the Daleks defined early Who .  However, as they do, the Cardiff crew fumbled and turned it into a single throwaway episode.

For rebooted V, this subplot is now a very crucial element to the show. It’s your way into the Visitor’s POV, and a chance to define as characters outside of being “the threat”. I’m really into more street level Sci Fi, and it’s a very good twist on the original V concept. Which only works when the plot’s allowed to breathe. But with the pacing all so rushed, My worry is that in the race to get to massive global takeover stuff (where the explody is), the show won’t get the opportunity to really expand the idea into a really good, sustaining story.  If they blow that- they might as well give up the game now.

So slow it down, kids. The fires haven’t started. Yet.

-Lou Dobbs abruptly departs from CNN after his show on Wednesday. I know people get a little cranky when having to work on a holiday, but that’s a bit much.  Then again, Dobbs clearly handed over his journno card for the much more lucrative realm of pundantry a few years back, so not really to big a loss there.

I do worry about some of his former CNN show’s regular guests, though. That bunch really isn’t quite attractive enough to fetch side pundit gigs anywhere else, and the poor dears may be left to wander the streets until Dobbs can return Fox’s phone calls …
