News Wheel: You can’t do that, chopped and screwed…

by mike on Nov.16, 2009, under from somewhere notebook, rants, werks

Yep, its the News Wheel- watch it spin.

On today’s hit list: Apple sort of wins over the clones, Did DJ Hero tank, why you can’t always get what you want on your Wii (and maybe why you shouldn’t), and  Infinity Ward suddenly hates PC owners.

Updated and expanded upon as things become interesting / author has time … and it begins after the jump!

Apple Computer won a motion for summary judgment in its suit against Florida based Psystar Corp. which covered copyright infringement. The California court ruling pointed out that simply purchasing an OS for use on non-Apple hardware is not protected against Copyright Law.

It seems more plausible that Psystar might have just been a trial balloon to see what Apple would do if bigger PC makers attempted to somehow backward OEM’d Apple’s OS (which Apple hasn’t done since Steve Jobs  put a hard stop to the practice in 2001) and configured the hardware around it.

So, my question as a consumer would be since the Mac OS X works best with (and designed for) Apple’s in house hardware- why would I pay more money for a lessened experience? Really, if you could put the engine from a 911 into a Focus- why would you? Because obviously, you’re going to find the handling to be a bit lacking.

From Psystar’s POV- if they bought the 911 engine and somebody wanted to stick it in a Focus- should either Ford or Porsche raise a stink? The Ruling lays down the thought that “just because you’re dumb enough to do it” isn’t quite the legal grounding to base a business on. However, the thought occurs to me that are plenty of businesses based on that premise (Microsoft and Apple, you know, for example)…

Epic DJ Hero fail. Or Not.-Initial sales data for Activision’s much hyped DJ Hero shows low sale across the four systems it was available for. Integration with World Tour instruments / game might have helped might have helped people get over the hump shelling out for another bit of kit. As it is, you can only use it for the one game- however good that game actually is.  Some folk still feel a bit cheated on all those Wii peripherals. Which brings us to…..

New Super Mario whining-It’s only coming out this week, but folks are already complaining about New Super Mario Bros. for it’s total lack of online gaming justice. But really- this game works better with all the players in the room- it’s easier to kill them that way. Accidentally, of course…

No Modern Warfare 2 Server love for PC owners- PC gamers petitioning Activision and  producer Infinity Ward to host game servers for the PC port of  Modern Warfare 2. Honestly, I’d rather play on a console anyway- considering I’m already paying for that. Which I suspect is the point. But I’m a little busy with Dragons and Zombie hoards at the moment to notice….

The Prisoner verdict: Style and Substance with a hallow center- Despite great performances from the leads, the AMC / ITV remount of The Prisoner throws everything against the wall- leaving out the subtlety and dark humor that made the classic enjoyable. It’s just not creepy enough.

Doctor Who verdict: The overtly gloomy episode you’ve (secretly) been waiting for- Not much of a spoiler, but the smug gets finally wiped off Ten’s mug.  In the most horrible way possible. Waters of Mars  is NOT a fun romp- which is best thing they could have done.

6 Music Pairings go all electro- Upcoming special sessions from BBC 6 Music see Little Boots paired with Gary Numan and La Roux paired up with Heaven 17.  This is why I love the BBC.

Oh. UK only podcast, then. That is why I hate the BBC….

Hey, there very well could be a possible new PiL record in the offing? Well…mayhaps. Jon Lydon explains all, I think.
